How To Take Care Of Your Coilovers

Like taking care of a high mileage car, as long as you regularly care for your coilovers, they will last and maintain their ability to adjust. In this post, we’ll cover how to treat your coilovers before you install them and how to keep them running strong with regular maintenance.

Before you install your coilovers, we highly recommend that you treat your coilovers liberally with a high-quality anti-seize type lubricant. The anti-seize shown was picked up our local auto parts store. As for the T-9, you can buy it in a liquid or aerosol form, depending on which you prefer to use. We’ve had success with both products so before the debate starts as to which one is best, as long as you are regularly re-applying the product on a yearly basis, your coilovers will stand a much higher chance of not seizing. To apply the anti-seize, we recommend removing all of the springs, adjustment perches and lower mounts and putting 4 beads of anti-seize lengthwise on the threads of the dampers. When you replace the perches, by spinning them down the length of the shock, it will work the anti-seize into the threads and keep them from seizing on the shock body as shown below.

Likewise, for the T-9, apply to the threads and wipe off the excess then reinstall the perches, mounts and springs.

For kits that offer upper pillow ball mounts, we also recommend treating them to keep them running smooth. With continual use, road debris and water will settle into the threads of your coilovers and the oil seals of the dampers. It is important, especially for those that live in areas where the winters can be particularly harsh, to regularly clean your coilovers of the road debris and salt and retreating them.

Caring for your coilovers is not complicated but the single, most important aspect of caring for your coilovers is your driving style and the driving conditions of your area. For areas where the interstates are riddled with pot-holes, shocks are understandably going to wear out faster. Also, if you’re more of a spirited driver, you will put more stress and wear on your coilovers than someone who is more conservative in their driving. With that said, for hoonigans and non-hoonigans alike, we will cover your blown dampers for 2 years, regardless of how you drive and if you have one blow outside of that two years, we can still offer replacements depending on stock.
